Scheer & Co: How Architecture Can Be Both Elegant and Playful

Scheer & Co. Interior Design

Here's a question, what if someone bought a home that was built in the 1900s and they want to incorporate a modern look in the interior without modifying the structure of the house, sounds impossible? Not for our featured Austin interior designer.

I recently had the pleasure to grab coffee with the mastermind of Scheer & Co., Killy Scheer herself. We conversed about her business, how she came to be, and everything in between. After we parted ways, I knew I needed to showcase her brilliance.

Scheer & Co. is a high-end residential and boutique commercial Austin interior design firm with projects nationwide.

Killy attended the University of Michigan and  Interior Design from Pratt Institute, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Science respectively. She refined her skills under the tutelage of such tastemakers as Jonathan Adler and Fawn Galli as well as at architecture firms including The Phillips Group and Studio CMP.  A 2011 relocation led her to Cravotta Interiors in Austin prior to launching Scheer & Co. From full renovations to small sprucing projects, Scheer & Co. works with clients nationwide and in a variety of styles and budgets.

Her firm takes a research-based and intellectual approach to design. They collaborate with clients to curate spaces that will reflect their personal narratives, aesthetic, and spirit. An architectural, design and decorative arts history enthusiast, Killy participated on several committees with Preservation Austin and was a member of Inherit Austin’s board of directors for three years.

In addition to her Austin interior design firm, Killy is a contributing writer in several design publications and is also a lecturer in the interior design department at Texas State University.

Hemphill Park (on the 2019 Tribeza Interiors Tour)

The house was built in 1910 and purchased by our clients in 2018. Our challenge was to respectfully combine their understated, modern aesthetic with the home’s architecture and history. The house is a study in style mixing: we elegantly fused transitional pieces with vintage and modern elements, keeping the interiors accessible with realistic, durable but elegant materials and finishes as they are a busy family with two young children and pets, who also enjoy entertaining.

Pemberton Heights - Historic 1930's Home

This bathroom had been part of a 1980s addition to a historic 1930's home. It was pretty generic and did not blend well with the original style of the house, so in addition to making it more beautiful and functional, we wanted to bring in some of the 1930s charms that defines the rest of the home.

Davenport Ranch (on the 2015 Tribeza Interiors Tour)

We transformed a traditional 1990s house with little natural light into a bright contemporary home for a family of five with a strong connection between the indoors and outdoors, clean lines and pops of color.

Brooklyn, NY - Remote Renovations

This is a renovation and furnishings project we did remotely – we love how it turned out, especially considering we didn't see it in person until I flew in to photograph it! As is typical of many New York apartments, windows run along just one wall, and there are often buildings directly across that obstruct light or views. As such, we wanted to keep the spaces feeling bright and airy. We concealed unattractive radiators with custom built-in cabinets under the windows, which added always-needed storage (in New York, at least) and stayed true to our clients' minimalist aesthetic overall but mixed textures and patterns to keep the look fresh and layered.
